Who was Bamsi Alp?

Bamsi Beyrek Alp is a legendary character in Turkish history and has been found in many folk tales. His biography has been written in the book “Dede Korkut”, the most famous epic of the Oghuz Turks. It describes struggles for freedom at a time when the Oghuz Turks were a herding people who lived in Yurts.

It is written there that once all the Oghuz princes and Beys gathered at a place. All of them were having sons and after seeing this Bay Bure Bey being melted started weeping that ALLAH hasn’t granted him a son who could serve and made his position stronger nor a brother as after me, my family will come to an end. After listening this, all the princes prayed to ALLAH Almighty to bless Bay Bure with a son. Bay Bichen also asked them to pray for him to bless him with a daughter. And in meantime, both of them were blessed with children.

Bay Bure sent his merchants to bring some presents for his son. Time passed and they came to Istanbul and bought a gray male sea colt, a finely strung bow and a six-part club. In their back to Bay Bure, they were attacked by the infidels of Avnik Castle. At that time, they were helped by the son of Bay Bure himself for whom they were having presents but they were not aware of him. The son of Bay Bure was not having any name as an Oghuz Turk was given a name when he cut off a head. So the son of Bay Bure decided to receive these presents from his father instead of introducing himself. The merchants were much impressed by him.

The young man went back to his father’s tent and didn’t tell anything about the infidels’ attack. Upon the arrival of the merchants, they kissed the hands of the young man after seeing him sitting beside Bay Bure. Bay Bure shouted that you are kissing the son’s hands first even when his father is sitting beside. The merchants came to know that the young man was the son of Bay Bure Khan. They also told the whole story to Bay Bure and he came to know that he had spilled blood and cut off the heands of the enemy. And then the same young man was given the name of Bamsi Beyrek in a gathering of the Oghuz Princes.

And then Bamsi Beyrek met with the daughter of Bay Bichen, Banu Chichek, when he gave a fat hunted deer to her nurses. After knowing about him, the princess asked them to bring him near to tent. After which both of them came to know about each other. At that time, Bamsi Beyrek also gave a golden ring to her as a sign of engagement. When Bamsi Beyrek went back to his father’s tent, he was already aware of his desire. And after passing a lot of resistances (He also spent captivity under King Shökli for 16 years), Bamsi Beyrek happily married to Banu Chichek. But in Dirilis Ertugrul season, Banu Chichek has been shown to be married to Dogan Alp and Bamsi Beyrek to Hafsa Hatun which is also a twist by the scriptwriter. In the series, he married Hafsa Hatun and both gave birth to two children named Aybars and Aslihan.

Bamsi Beyrek Alp was a kindhearted and a man who loves to live a jolly life. Bamsi Beyrek was a great aggressive warrior. It is not mentioned how long he lived and when he died but spent his time righteously. In Dirilis Ertugrul Series, Bamsi has been included just to pay tribute to this legendary character as he wasn’t having any connection with the Ertugrul Ghazi. Bamsi Beyrek is famous to fight with two swords. And ALLAH Almighty knows the best. (By. Uzair Akram)
